The Canadian singer is currently working on a new album, which will provisionally be released next year. The star is married to sound engineer Demacio 'Demo' Castellón and has seven-year-old Nevis from a previous relationship.
She is proud of her career and the way her life has panned out, especially when she thinks of how much was made of her appearance when she started out.
"It's kind of weird. I get it now that I look back and I go, 'Wow, I was pretty sexy.' I've definitely taken some sexy vitamins in the past! It's cool," she laughed.
"When I first started my career, I didn't like it because I was trying to establish myself as a serious musician before I was a sex symbol."
Nelly is 31, and loves being a young mother. She started wanting kids when she was 20, explaining she couldn't walk past a pregnant woman without feeling a tug in her chest.
Being a mum is the most important thing to Nelly, and she makes sure Nevis understands her job.
"She gets it. I've always explained my job to her," she told Stylist magazine. "Even when I would get ready I would say, 'This is mummy's uniform - I wear all this make-up so it sparkles from 100 meters away and you can see mummy on stage from the audience.'"
